The role of parents in playgroup

There are many ways that you can be involved; join the committee, duty helper, volunteer duty helper, and from the newsletter and notices in the A-Frame you will see other ways that you can help from the annual toy scrub to baking cakes for fundraising events or collecting cardboard boxes for craft sessions.

Duty Helper

 A valuable role at playgroup is being a duty helper. Each parent is required to perform one duty per half term.  A duty is either 9 – 12 noon or 12 noon til 3 and will be one of sessions that your child attends.

The importance of duties cannot be stressed strongly enough.  Playgroup relies on voluntary help so each day one parent is asked to do a duty, however it doesn’t have to be a parent; grandparents, aunties, childminders are all welcome.  Please let us know if you have a  preferred day for your duty.

 A list is issued towards the end of each term to inform you when your duty will be during the following term, detailing names and telephone numbers.  If you are not able to do the day you have been allocated please arrange a swap with another parent and then write the change on the Master copy which is placed on the parents’ notice board in playgroup.  If you definitely do not wish to do any duties, playgroup is willing to pay for extra cover.  The cost will be added to your child’s bill. Details of what to do when you are on duty are displayed in the kitchen and updated regularly.

 Mum’s with new babies are exempt from duties for 6 months after the birth of their baby.

Volunteer duty helper

Any additional help is always very welcome.  Many families have more than one child who attends playgroup and when their youngest is in playgroup they like to do a volunteer duty (don’t know what to do with all that spare time!).  Volunteers do a weekly or fortnightly duty and in return they do not pay for their child to attend that session. If you would like to volunteer please speak to Auntie Heather.

Committee

We are a registered charity who’s many ventures are organized by an enthusiastic committee of parents.  Member are elected at the annual general meeting normal held in September and serve for at least one year.  You are welcome to be on committee for as long as you like and can even continue once your child has gone to school.  For details of what each role involves please either speak to Auntie Heather or a member of the current committee.

Roles on committee include;

Details of the current committee can be found on the parent information board or see the ‘mug shots’ in the foyer! We always welcome new members to committee so if you would like to help please speak to Auntie Heather or a member of the committee.

A non-portfolio member is someone who is unable to commit to coming to committee meeting but would be willing to help out when called upon for coffee mornings and jobs such as the annual toy wash.

Whether you want to be on the committee or not every parent is welcome to attend committee meetings which are normally held in the pub!

Other ways to support playgroup;

  • Collect Sainsbury and Tesco vouchers and pop then in the box in foyer.
  • Browse through the books supplied by The Book People.  We receive a percentage from all sales.
  • Come and ‘show and tell’ about your job.  Are you a farmer, in the fire, police or ambulance service?  If you have a job that would fascinate the children and you would like to do a talk please speak to Auntie Heather.
  • Do you have a talent? We welcome all help, it could be growing things in our vegetable garden, playing piano for the Christmas play or helping with the maintenance of our wonderful outdoor area.
